NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team, just two wins away from qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, received word on Thursday that three members of its team have earned ECAC East all-league honors.
Freshman defenseman Amanda Wilks leads the contingent as the Winnipeg, Man., native was selected to the conference's first-team and was also tabbed to the league's all-rookie squad. Wilks currently tops the Cadets' defensemen in goals (14), assists (15) and points (29). The first-year player leads all Norwich players with seven power play goals, while listing third with three game-winning markers.
Joining Wilks on the all-rookie team is freshman forward Julie Fortier. Fortier, who was also selected to the league's "Honorable Mention" team, leads all Norwich freshmen in goals (15), assists (17) and points (32). The Saint-Malachie, Que., product has made a tremendous impact in her first season with the Maroon and Gold.
Rounding out Norwich's list of ECAC East honorees is junior forward Sophie Leclerc, who was selected to all-league second team for the second consecutive season. The Barre, Vt., native leads the team in goals (17), assists (25) and points (42). One of the squad's driving offensive forces, Leclerc has helped lead Norwich into the ECAC East semifinals for the first time in the young history of the program. She is tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (five), and ranks second on the club in power play tallies (six).
Norwich (17-8-1, 14-6-1 ECAC East) set program record for overall wins and conference victories en route to securing the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Cadets will continue their quest for a league title and an automatic berth into the NCAAs on Saturday, March 7, when they face No. 3-seed Southern Maine at 7 p.m.
